Intro, terms, and tools

Creative Media Path finishes a short piece — video, audio, or visual — in five phases. Prepare story and tools, practice a draft, produce the cut, prove with review and captions, present private-first with credits. Parent OK for faces and voices is part of prepare, not a surprise in produce.

Shot is one camera take or image. Cut is where you trim and reorder clips. Rights means you have permission to use music, images, and faces — your recording, Creative Commons with credit, or library tracks. Captions are on-screen text so the story works with sound off.

Install CapCut, DaVinci Resolve free, or plan in Canva. With a parent, agree who can appear on camera and how siblings say OK to being filmed.

You’ll know it when: audience + message sentence + terms checked + editor installed.

If stuck: No editor yet? CapCut on phone counts. Filming people? Write consent lines before shoot day.

Audience, format, outline

Who listens and what should they feel or do after? Write one sentence for audience and one for message. Pick a format early: short video, podcast clip, comic, photo essay, or motion graphic — finishing one format beats half-building three.

Outline beginning, middle, and end in three beats. Steal structure from a piece you admire (not the content), then swap in your topic. Keep scope finishable in five phases — under two minutes of finished media is a strong target.

You’ll know it when: outline doc with audience line, format choice, and three beats.

If stuck: If the story sprawls, cut the middle beat to one location and one action. A “day in the life of my desk plant” finishes; a “history of all music” doesn’t.

Parent tip: Help them pick a scope that finishes in five phases — protect them from epic ambitions.

Record, edit, and tighten

Shoot or record the whole draft — messy is fine. Collect images, music, and sound effects you have rights to use (your recording, Creative Commons with credit, or CapCut’s free library). Keep a running credits list from day one.

Get parent OK before filming faces, school logos, or other people’s voices. Siblings need a quick “I OK being filmed.” If someone says no, crop, blur, or rewrite the beat — respect is part of the craft.

Cut to your time goal — under two minutes is excellent for a first piece. Add captions or on-screen text so the story works with sound off. Trim breaths, repeats, and any beat that doesn’t serve the three-part outline.

Show a parent or friend once. Fix one thing they noticed — not ten. Update your credits list with final music and tool names while you still remember where assets came from.

You’ll know it when: edited piece under time goal + captions started + draft credits list.

If stuck: Good-enough audio beats perfect video — viewers forgive shaky cam faster than muffled sound. Record voice-over in a closet if the room echoes. Mute and read captions only — if it’s confusing, reorder scenes. Export a mid-quality draft; perfection can wait for publish week.

Parent tip: Sign a quick OK if you or siblings appear — model consent out loud. Give one note on the cut, not ten.

You’ll know it when: caption pass done + one fix note + credits draft.

Private-first publish + credits

Publish unlisted or private-first. Share the link with family only unless a parent explicitly OK’s a wider audience. Public posting is a deliberate later choice — finishing Media Path does not require going viral.

Show the piece in three minutes or less. Attach credits.txt (or end-card credits): music, images, fonts, tools, and anyone who appeared on camera. Thank collaborators by name if they want credit.

You’ll know it when: unlisted or private link + credits list.

If stuck: A Drive or Messages link to family only still counts as publish for this path. If export fails, screen-record the timeline playing — then fix export tomorrow.

Parent tip: Default unlisted — public is a later choice you make together.
