Intro, terms, and tools

Community Impact Path builds something useful for real people — flyer, map, guide, checklist — in five phases. Prepare a kind need and scope, practice listening and research, produce the artifact, prove safety with a parent review, present a respectful handoff. Not a portfolio flex.

Stakeholder is anyone affected or who can use what you make — neighbour, club lead, librarian. Consent means permission before you speak for others or share their stories. Scope is what you can finish in five phases — partnership, not a saviour story about you.

Talk with a parent about local issues you could support without blame. Pick Canva, Google Docs, or printable PDF as your likely format. Write who is helped in one sentence.

You’ll know it when: kind need sentence + terms checked + scope note + tool picked.

If stuck: Problem too big? Shrink to a slice — clearer recycling signs, not "end climate change."

Parent tip: Help them avoid hero complex — ask who already works on this.

Scope with heart and trustworthy sources

Name a local need without blaming people — litter near a park, confusing transit info for newcomers, a club that needs a clearer volunteer checklist. Write who is helped and keep scope doable in five phases. Community work is partnership, not a saviour story about you.

Interview or listen to one person who knows the issue — a neighbour, club lead, or librarian — and write what you heard in their words. If the problem is bigger than a teen can fix alone, shrink to a slice you can support.

Find two trustworthy sources — library, government (Ontario open data welcome), or established nonprofits. Note dates and links. If two sources disagree, write the disagreement instead of picking the flashier claim.

Listen again to someone affected or a proxy org. Build a one-page fact sheet with citations and a “what we still don’t know” line. Honest limits are strength, not failure.

You’ll know it when: problem statement + two source links + fact sheet draft with limits line.

If stuck: Pick a friction you’ve seen twice this month. “Make the school recycling bin signs clearer” finishes; “end climate change” doesn’t fit five phases. If data is thin, say so and shrink the claim. A librarian search help desk is a valid research tool.

Parent tip: Help them avoid hero complex — ask who already works on this. Teach triangulation calmly.

Make something useful

Build a guide, map, checklist, flyer, or simple page — plain language, mobile-friendly or printable. Match the format to how the community already shares info.

Credit your sources from practice phase on the artifact. A one-page Canva flyer beats a fancy app that never leaves your laptop.

Keep stereotypes and overpromising out — you will prove safety with a parent in the next phase.

If stuck: Printable one-pager first. Words in a Doc, decorate later — usefulness over aesthetics.

Prove it is respectful and safe

Parent reviews for safety, respect, and stereotypes. Fix anything that could harm, overpromise, or speak for a group you don't belong to.

Explain the fix out loud — safety review is care, not censorship.

Re-read with your fact sheet limits line. Does the artifact still match what sources actually support?

You’ll know it when: parent review OK + one fix note describing what changed.

Learn

Handoff with permission

Share with a teacher, club, library, or org who can actually use the artifact — ask permission first. A respectful email or in-person handoff with a one-paragraph “how to use this” note counts more than a public portfolio post.

Do a short show-and-tell of the artifact for family or the recipient. Write one next step if you continue (print five copies, translate a line, collect feedback). Thank the people who helped you research.

You’ll know it when: handoff email or note + optional short recording of the walkthrough.

If stuck: Sharing with one trusted adult still finishes the path. If an org is slow to reply, document the ask and keep a printed copy ready.
